Lubavitch Center of Howard County in Columbia, Maryland, USA
Breastfeeding in the Sanctuary:
It is permitted as long as a nursing cover is used.
Private Nursing Locations:
There is a daycare room, located off the main hallway, that mothers are welcome to use if they want. There is no sign on the door. It can be found easily, as the synagogue is not large and the room is easily seen. It is open and available. There are 2 rockers. There is a changing station as well and sinks.
Accessibility notes: Shoes should be removed on the infant side of the room where the rockers are located. The lights may not be turned on, although it sounds like there is plenty of natural light during the daytime. Also, as it is the daycare room, all of the toys are out. They are not sorted and some of the mukzah items (items that are not permitted for Shabbat use, often because they use batteries or the like) are still on the shelves and accessible.
There is no information made public about breastfeeding policy.
“Breastfeeding is highly encouraged and supported. The rabbi and his wife have 11 kids all of whom were breastfed. Although the congregation is older, everyone is extremely accepting.
What we have done when needing/wanting to be uncovered is to close the partition between the infant and toddler room and call out if someone entered the toddler room.”
General Child Friendliness:
There are changing tables in the women’s bathrooms, the men’s bathrooms, and in the daycare room. There is no place for stroller parking, or to leave children’s supplies.
Babies and children are encouraged to be in the main service. Children are allowed to run around and make noise (not yelling and screaming, but quiet talking/babbling is okay). If they go up onto the bima, the rabbi will accommodate, and they are encouraged to go with their father if he has an aliyah.
