Breastfeeding at Beacon Hebrew Alliance, Beacon, NY

Beacon Hebrew Alliance in Beacon, New York, USA

Breastfeeding in the Sanctuary:

It is permitted.  While there is no written policy, multiple mothers have done so. The rabbi, cantor and whole community are breastfeeding, baby, and family friendly (and just open and friendly in general).

Private Nursing Locations:

Private nursing can often be done in the rabbi’s office or a back room if you need, but there’s no designated spot.  You can find this out, or find good locations by asking other parents, but there is no formal information given.  However, the usually used locations are accessible on Shabbat.

Other Information:

No information about breastfeeding policy is publicly available.

Nursing is welcomed by this community, with a respondent commenting that “When I was there on my first visit and attending a toddler’s reading group during Shabbas services, I started to leave the room to go breastfeed and everyone stopped me. “You would more likely be judged for NOT breastfeeding around here,” someone joked.”  She added that she breastfeeds her toddler during services quite comfortably.

Genera Child Friendliness:

There is a changing table in the back room of the social hall.  Strollers are parked in any of the following locations: coat area, front hall, back porch, or inside, and there is space for children’s needed supplies.

The main service is “Fabulous” with children’s presence. “The rabbi has two small children, one of whom sometimes ends up on the bima during service. The cantor once held my toddler while leading service too. There are many families around and the shul is multigenerational and very inclusive.”   Besides the man service “there is a designated child playspace and library in the social hall, which doubles as a minyan space. The rabbi’s office is frequently used for toddler groups, diaper changing, and nursing in private. There are both designated children’s services (segmented by age) and combined services that everyone is welcome to attend.”
