Breastfeeding at: CSAIR (Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale), Bronx, NY

CSAIR in Riverdale, New York, USA

Updated

Breastfeeding in the Sanctuary:

It is permitted.  There is “no written policy but people have said so. When they updated their nursing room, they made a point of telling women that they should not feel they can ONLY nurse in the nursing room.”  It is somewhat uncomfortable to nurse in the sanctuary if you don’t want to be seen, as the set-up (pews face in 3 directions) means that there is always someone facing towards you.  Others have nursed in he sanctuary with no problems.

Nursing Locations:

There is a separate space for breastfeeding privately, called a Nursing Lounge.  It is labeled, on the main floor, near the bathrooms and the sanctuary.  It contains two nursing chairs, carpet, some toys, a changing table, and nice framed art.  It can be accessed both from the hall and through the women’s bathroom (it is connected by a door.)  On some occasions, the light has been off on Shabbat, but the synagogue is working to improve that.

Other Information:

This community is very comfortable with breastfeeding and bottle feeding, both with and without extra coverage, and is friendly to baby-feeding in all its methods.

The website has the following statement about breastfeeding in the section regarding programming for children ages 0-5: “Nursing mothers are welcome to use the Nursing Lounge off the Main Lobby. Changing tables are available in the Men’s Room and Women’s Room off the Main and Downstairs Lobbies.”  No statement about breastfeeding in the service is published on the website.  However, the community is comfortable enough that nursing is “a non-issue”.

General  Child Friendliness:

There are changing tables in the Women’s bathrooms, Men’s bathrooms, family/children’s bathroom, and the Nursing Room. There is space for stroller parking in the main-floor coatroom.  There is space for children’s supplies as well in the coat room.  Children are “very welcomed” in the main service, although less so for the High Holidays.

Summary:

This synagogue received general ratings of:

    • Great, could barely be better- 1
    • Great, could barely be better- 1
    • Alright, it works pretty well- 3
    • Great, could barely be better- 1

out of 7, where 1 was the best rating and 7 was the worst.
