Altshul/CBE in Brooklyn, New York, USA
Breastfeeding in the Sanctuary:
It is permitted and is a welcome, totally comfortable thing to do. “I’ve breastfed during services, and no one seemed to notice. I never use a nursing cover..”
Private Nursing Locations:
Private nursing can be done in the rabbi’s office, which is an enormous room with couches. The door is usually open, and the room is often empty. Sometimes there are other parents/babies there.
There is no information about breastfeeding policy made public by this community.
Nursing is welcomed by this community, “It’s an independent minyan and Brownstone/liberal Brooklyn. Everyone accepts breastfeeding.”
Genera Child Friendliness:
I have no information about changing tables.
Strollers are parked in the hallway. There is space for children’s stuff.
In the main service there are “Lots of kids all the time”. However, “parents try to keep them quiet or take them out if not.” The website adds: “A section of the room in which we daven is set aside for families with children. When we meet in the Rabbi’s office, that section is the back two rows; in the chapel, it is the front of the room.”
